Canada Day…Revisited

If you missed our July 1st Red & White Canada Day Celebrations…don’t worry, you didn’t.  You see, July 1st brought showers and inclement weather for tennis and as a result the celebration has been postponed.  As a result the Tyandaga Canada Day celebrations will be held on the next NICE Wednesday, which we’re hoping will be July 8th.  Please plan to drop by for the weekly fun and frivolity known as the Wednesday Night Mixed Doubles Round Robin and also enjoy strawberries and ice cream with your tennis.  We’ll still be theme-ing…so show your patriotism by wearing your favourite red and white tennis gear and be eligible to win FABULOUS prizes.  (Should you decide to compete with the always fashionably attired Terry Roberts, you better co-ordinate your wardrobe beyond the visually obvious top and shorts.  He goes all out and has been known to colour co-ordinate right down to the undergarments and socks!  If you don’t believe me, just ask him.  He’ll show you! ;-)

TTC Beautification

Did you happen to notice all the improvements around the club lately?  The flowers are in full bloom in the boxes in the stands.  Thanks to Karen Stothart for helping to beautify our facilities. Even the net on the practice wall has been fixed.

The Many Talents of Michel

He’s not just a member…He’s the OTA President…AND also a carpenter in his spare time!  The letter box on the office door and those brand new picnic tables you are now enjoying on the deck are the handiwork of Michel Lecavalier.  While not tending to his OTA duties or looking after grandchildren, the tables were built by Michel in his spare time in the spectacular shop he has in his home.  In addition he’ll be refurbishing a couple of the old picnic tables that are still salvageable. After that he’s going to refurbish the decks. We may have him busy into the fall.

2009 Parade of Champions has begun!

The first Major Tournament of the year is now in the history books, even though it nearly became the first tournament in recent memory to get rained out!   It got off to a good start; the Friday Night Lights were glowing as first round action proceeded without a hitch.  However, the clouds moved in overnight and the decision was made early Saturday that it was going to be too wet, damp, foggy, cloudy, miserable and just plain dangerous to try and get any matches in.  So everything was pushed back to Sunday…and here’s what happened:  Brenda Taylor and Stephen O’Keefe are the 2009 Tyandaga Mixed Doubles Champs!  They emerged victorious in a hard fought contest against finalists Bruce Cates and his daughter Jill.  In the final on the backside of the draw...Judy Flintoff and John Hiscock came storming back from an early deficit to win the first set, but  Julie Otto and Lance DeJong prevailed in the final two sets to claim the Consolation Title.  Congratulations to all participants and thanks for all the players and spectators for making it another fun filled event!  Thanks also to our club pro Gabriel for officiating the final matches and OTA President Michel for donating the terrific OTA shirts as prizes for the winners.  Karen was also busy providing fruit and refreshments for the players and spectators.

Sign Up Now for the Next TTC Major!

Hot off the heels of Wimbledon…(which is almost as legendary as the TTC)…comes the next Major Tournament of Tyandaga:  The Women’s and Men’s Doubles Tournament set for July 24th and 25th.   Several of the BIG names are already in and the network contracts have been finalized with worldwide coverage again secured.  (World Wide Web at least. :-)   Stephen O’Keefe and Michael Flintoff  will no doubt be looking to have their names inscribed (again!) on the Prestigious Plaque of Champions.  Graham Bye is back and with new partner John Hiscock.  They will no doubt be looking to say Buh-Bye to any idea of a repeat…with defeat planned for those who meet them on the courts.  Last years Consolation Champ Lance DeJong, (who this year claimed the Mixed Consolation Title with Julie Otto) has clearly lowered his standards and will try for tournament success this year with new partner Tom Otto.  The dynamic duos of Julie Otto and Judy Flintoff as well as Cecilia Richardson and sister Veronica Fyck are among other names of note on the sign up sheet so far.  Be sure to add yours to the list SOON!  The deadline is July 19th!   Entry fee is $10/person.  Inquiries should be directed to Tournament Director Julie Otto.

Up Your Game!

TTC Pro Gabriel Radulescu wants to remind you of his "Stroke of the Week" specials!  It is now being offered each and every Friday, from 6pm to 7pm, just before the Mixed Doubles. This program is offered for $10 per session to all members.  Please confirm your attendance in advance to: g_radulescu@hotmail.com.  The program will vary depending on the particular needs of those coming.

Ladies: Up your game again!

As many of you already know, Tuesday mornings are reserved for the weekly Women’s Round Robin.  Gabriel is now offering an added incentive for Tyandaga Women looking to work on not only their “game”, but also their cardiovascular capabilities.  The new and improved format for Tuesday mornings now includes Gabriel’s 15 minute drill!  Drop by and test your stamina.

‘Night Courts’

Looking for some free courts during "prime time"?  Both the Thursday and Friday night leagues are operating on just three courts from 7pm-10pm, which leaves one court open during that time for members to use. Please remember to sign in.

Saturday Morning Special

Anyone who has ever dropped in for the men’s Saturday morning round robin tennis at Tyandaga, you will know just how much fun, and yet competitively intense each session can be.  Well, recently the level of play reached astronomically new heights.  Our club pro, Gabriel Radulescu, coached his son Andrei Radulescu to 2 Canadian National Championships a few years ago.  Andrei also played in the U.S. Open and Australian Open.  Andrei lives locally and came to the club to assist his dad with the round robin this past Saturday.  As you can imagine, those who survived his serve or volley insist it was an absolute delight to see the talent at this level.  If you missed it this past weekend, perhaps this is added incentive to show up on the next Saturday morning you have free as Andrei plans on helping out when he is available for this round robin.  (While some of the regulars might call this raising their game…I would like to suggest it was more of a case of a young pup trying to teach old dogs new tricks.  See if you can guess who the old dogs are!)

Looking for a “Date”?

We have several “dates” we want you to mark on your busy schedules.  Keep an eye out for our delayed Canada Day Mixed Drop in (perhaps as early as Wednesday July 8th). As noted earlier, the next BIG Tournament is July 24thand 25th.  Following close after is the OTA Night, on Wednesday, July 29th.  Add to your growing collection of OTA T-shirts while learning new skills. The Singles’ Tournament goes throughout the month of August with the Men’s and Women’s Singles Finals set for Saturday September 12th!!!  Sneaks and Cleats is on September 13th.  The Tyandaga Tennis Club Year-End Banquet is tentatively scheduled for October 10; more details when the date and venue are confirmed.

Looking for “Input”

Your humble scribe is always on the lookout for good stories, tall tales or embarrassing observations from the Courts of Tyandaga.  If you have something you’d like included in the next newsletter, please send it to totto@niagarac.on.ca and I will be sure to embellish in everyway possible while trying to keep some semblance of truth from the original version.  Any gossip is good gossip!  (Some sources may even be kept confidential!)  Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Quote-ches Corner

As TTC Regulars know all too well, a lot of funny/interesting/exciting things are said on and around the courts and as usual, we’d like to share those comments with all our members.  So if you hear a funny…or an inspirational comment you’d like your fellow members to know about, e-mail it to me and as long as it doesn’t set me up for a libel suit, it may end up in the TTC Newsletter.  Here are a few of our past classics.

“Clearly…the Anger Management classes didn’t work.”

“It’s not the heat, it’s the stupidity.”

“I thought you’re supposed to get better every year.”

“I knew I shouldn’t have had that second glass of wine with dinner.”

“I’ll remember that…Dick.”

That’s all for now…but be sure to check your emails again soon as another update is imminent.  There’s so much more to tell you…and so much season ahead.

WELCOME BACK and we hope to see you on the courts real soon!

Where to begin???

Time flies when we’re having fun!!!

Socially Sensational…

Two Terrific Tournaments…

El Presidente…!

And so much more…

Read on.  This is only the beginning.

Hail to the Chief!

This newsletter is going to start at the top…as in the top of the OTA.  In case you haven’t heard yet, you may very well be brushing shoulders with Tennis Royalty on a regular basis.  The new President of the Ontario Tennis Association is a member at our very own TYANDAGA Tennis Club!  Be sure to pass on your congratulations to Michel Lecavalier, the new President of the OTA.  (Does he realize that rhymes?)

It’s Tournament Time again!

If all goes according to plan, you may be reading this prior to Friday, July 20th, which by no coincidence, is the opening round of the annual fun-filled adventure known as The Mixed Doubles Tournament.  This year we have no less than 20 TEAMS competing for the coveted title.  Some old ‘favourites’ have new partners…others are sticking with previous winning formulas, and still others continue to test their marital fortitude by taking to the courts side-by-spouse in an attempt at Tennis Immortality.  (I’m guessing this is what the minister/priest might have been talking about when he mentioned that “for better and for worse” stuff in the wedding vows.)  Even if you’re not a participant, being a spectator can also be tons of fun.  Read on to see what you missed last time.

More fun than humans should be allowed to have!

The first tournament of the year produced more twists and turns and plot developments than the upcoming Harry Potter book.  Let’s start with who won.  Given the absence of the “2006 Cheam Rollers”…there was some serious discussion as to whether the team of Michael Flintoff and Stephen O’Keefe would be able to reclaim TTC Men’s Doubles Supremacy.  Former TTC President Terry Milford had apparently given Mr. O’Keefe a run for his money in winter tennis and there had been some speculation that perhaps given the absence of the Cheam-team…maybe it was Milford-Time!  Partnered with Dale Sutherland, there was speculation in the stands that perhaps an upset was in the making.  Without going in to the gory details however, let’s just say it didn’t happen.  Last years Consolation Champs (Gord B. And Terry F) also tried to “Fyck” em up…but it was not to be.  In fact, if truth be told, the duo determined to take back the title only lost three games in total in the semi’s and the finals.  Oh well…there’s always next year.  So, moving right along to the winners circle, restored to their glory of previous years, the 2007 Men’s Doubles Champions are…Michael Flintoff and Stephen O’Keefe.  (I’d love to check the records and verify just how many times they have been TTC Men’s Doubles Champs… but that would require work..  No doubt if you asked either Michael or Stephen, they’ll tell you.)

Other Winners Include:

The rest of the tournament weekend played out this way:

Men’s Doubles Champs;  Michael Flintoff & Stephen O’Keefe

Men’s Doubles Finalists;  Gord Bradley and Terry Fyck

Women’s Doubles Champs:  Cindy Leich & Laura McQuicken

Women’s Doubles Finalists:  Martha Marian & Aggie Larsson

Men’s Consolation Champs:  Claro Asuncion & Stephen Cheesman

Men’s Consolation Finalists :  Tom Otto & Bernie Dobrucki

Women’s Consolation Champs:  Darlene Shaw and Mary Beth Duwyn

Women’s Consolation Finalists:  Lori Wallace & Judy Flintoff

The Night The Lights Went Out In Court 4

If you were not an active tournament participant, it is entirely possible you missed out on one of the most humourous/entertaining incidents in the history of the Tyandaga Tennis Club.  Try to put yourself in to the intensity of a movie like “Friday Night Lights!”.  (Football based, yet terrific!!)   It’s tournament time and every single TTC tennis player is thinking they too…could be a champion.  The level of competition is unparalleled!! It’s getting late, yet sixteen tournament hopefuls are fiercely engaged in battle.  On court 3, its newcomers Josh Pinto and John Vandemeinden in a hotly contested match against Stephen Cheesman and Claro Ascunsion…when all of a sudden… everything goes dark on courts 3 and 4!  Serious confusion breaks out.  No one is quite sure what happened.  We do know it’s not 11 p.m. yet, so it’s not curfew time when the lights shut off automatically.  As everyone searches for answers, Mr. Cheesman laughingly admits he is the guilty one.  Whilst racing for a long lobbeed ball, he ran smack in to the fence separating the back courts from the front.  He insists it was only by pure accident that he somehow hit the light switch with his shoulder or his elbow or some other part of his anatomy.  Imagine…what are the odds of that!  But accidents do happen.  The problem now is…time is running out.  With four matches to get done, it’ll take fifteen or twenty minutes for the lights to cool and come back up again.  As tournament officials furiously debate what to do…suddenly, the lights go out on courts 1 & 2 as well!!!???

What was going on, everyone asked.  Are the Tennis Gods against us?  Are there forces of evil trying to prevent these crusaders of the courts from finishing their appointed rounds?  No.  This time it was the good intentions of one of our ‘newcomers’.  As the culprit who shall remain nameless (but it starts with John) was trying to turn the lights back on, he pushed the wrong button and threw the entire playing surface in to darkness!  While not quite as widespread as the great blackout of August 2003, it will no doubt be a TTC Tournament many won’t soon forget.

Name Game…

As you have already read, watching and participating in this years tournament was tremendous fun, but as has been noted in the past,  listening can be equally as entertaining.  No doubt it comes as no surprise to learn the cries of “MICHAEL!!!” could be heard ringing through the hills of Tyandaga…(OFTEN!)  But if you listened closely, you could also hear shouts of  “OH, TONY!”…Multiple “Terry’s” and “Judy’s” were mentioned, but my favourite was the mutterance of “Jesus, Mary…Joseph” heard after one missed shot.  (And I didn’t even know they were members!)

Muchos Gracios

Some serious “Thank-You” notes are being delivered via this newsletter to the following WONDERFUL people:

Debbie Lecavilier…You were asked to step up at the very last minute to take over as Tournament Director and you did a spectacular job helping with the schedule and getting on and off the courts in an orderly fashion.  Thank you SO MUCH Debbie for taking on this thankless job.

Fahrid Ikharbine …Despite some misunderstandings about how the draw works and who gets scheduled where and why…you remained gracious and professional in overseeing the event from beginning to end.

Carol Jenkins, Melissa Cheam and other “Social Activists”…Breakfast, a BBQ lunch, water and other beverages were all greatly appreciated by those who had to duke it out in extreme heat and sunshine.  It was a tremendous luxury having bagels, croissants, hot dogs and hamburgers and more available right on site so that spectators and competitors alike didn’t have to go far for fluids and nourishment!

The Two Terry’s:  Terry Milford and Terry Roberts for almost always having their camera’s with them to take pictures and then graciously sharing them with Stephen Cheesman who posts them on the website.

Richard Kluznik, Dave Bissell, Guy Paquette, and Martin Harm:  Thank you so much to these four fine gentlemen who despite sudden changes to the line-up, and unknown partnering, agreed to carry on even though they had no idea until almost game time, who it was they would be playing with.  Your commitment to the spirit of competition is appreciated and should be admired.

Family Fun Day

Chalk up yet another successful Family Fun Day at Tyandaga.  June 25th saw lots of TTC members show up with their whole family to play some tennis, enjoy some skill testing competitions, and watch Melissa try and work a BBQ!  There were draws and prizes, and plenty of socializing.  Check the website for pictures

And the winner is…

Carson Otto was pretty happy when organizers asked him to draw the winning ticket for the 50/50 Draw at the Family Fun Day.  With more than $30 on the line, spectators were politely urging him to please draw their ticket.  Good thing the draw was held out in the open in front of lots of people, with the jar behind his back, and there was no way he could have seen which ticket he pulled out…because the grin on young Carsons face couldn’t have been larger than when he drew the winner from the jar,  then took a quick look at the tickets in his own pocket and discovered, yes, it was a match!!!  Against insurmountable odds, he was able to draw his own ticket as the winner of the coveted $30 prize!

Again…a great big THANK-YOU is again due to Carol Jenkins, Melissa Cheam and Cheriene Vieira for the treats and decorations.

Coming up Next Newsletter

If you haven’t been checking out the many Social Events on the TTC Calendar, you are missing great fun, great food, and great tennis.  So far this season we have had the Family Fun Day, Canada Day, French Open and Wimbledon specials.  Details on the last three will be published in the next newsletter!  (Since this one is getting toooooo long.)

Oh what a wicked WEB we’ve weaved

If you haven’t been there yet, you have to check out our website!  Webmaster Stephen Cheesman does an absolutely AMAZING job of updating pictures, schedules, and much, much more.  In fact, it is so outstanding you are going to want to have www.tyandagatennis.com as one of your favourites.  Once you’re there you can easily navigate your way around.  Playing times are listed as well as tournament and social event information.   And those pictures!  If you couldn’t personally attend a tournament, or one of our many social events, the next best thing to being there, is checking out the many photos proudly displayed for all to see.

Quote-ches Corner

This is a feature we started last year, but this season I NEED your help!   A lot of funny/interesting/exciting things are said on and around the courts and we’d like to share those comments with all our members…so if you hear a funny…or an inspirational comment you’d like your fellow members to know about, e-mail it to me and it may up in next months newsletter.  Here are a few of last years classics.

“If he’s not bleeding…he hasn’t been playing in a tournament.”

--Not hard to figure out who is being discussed after several layers of skin-toff  were left on the courts.

“It’s not the heat, it’s the stupidity.”

--A self deprecating comment made by a player who was humble enough to NOT blame HOT weather conditions for his/her early tournament departure.

“I thought you were supposed to get better every year.”

--A lot of folks thinking, saying and admitting to this one.

Editors Note:  That’s all for now…but be sure to check your emails again soon as another update is imminent.  There’s so much more to tell you.  There are several items from earlier in the season we just don’t have room for in this edition.  And of course, with NOTHING BUT SUNSHINE in the forecast, this weekends Mixed Doubles Tournament is bound to be another BRIGHT AND BRILLIANT…SMOKIN’ HOT classic!

Hope to see you there!

Your humble scribe…

A Midsummer Nets Dream

Could it possibly get any better than this?  The summer of 2006 has been pretty fantastic overall.  Okay, so we’ve had to endure a few rain dates, but we’ve also enjoyed lots of brilliant sunshine, and very few fog/smog days.  It’s been just about perfect for playing the first summer on our BRAND NEW courts!

Much Ado About Lots of Things

You’ll notice the Shakespearean theme developing here (previous two titles) and in true William fashion, this newsletter could get lengthy.  So, you might want to make yourself comfortable, as we’ve got a lot of catching up to do.

Merchants of Tennis

Two of our annual (legendary) tournaments have now come and gone, and if you missed the excitement, let’s first announce the winners…then we’ll tell the rest of the stories:

Women’s A Champions:  Judy Flintoff & Martha Morrison

Women’s A Finalists: Dianne Cassidy & Jennifer Roach

Women’s B Champions:  Veronica Fyck & Cecelia Richardson

Women’s B Finalists: Loraine Buck-Forget & Tracey Pocaluyko

Men’s A Champions: Anthony & Andre Cheam

Men’s A Finalists:  Michael Flintoff & Stephen O’Keefe

Men’s B Champions:  Terry Fyck & Gord Bradley

Men’s B Finalists:  Rene Miranda and Claro Asuncion

Mixed A Champions:  Jaqueline Baus & Anthony Cheam

Mixed A Finalists: Melissa & Andre Cheam

Mixed B Champions:  Judy Flintoff & Tony Lewis

Mixed B Finalists:  Jennifer & Brian Roach

The Quality of Mercy *Merchant of Venice

You will have noticed a few names that “Cheam” to be the same in the aforementioned winner’s circles, and if you were amongst the many participants or spectators at the two tournaments, you will no doubt now be very aware of the new Men’s A Champions.  Anthony and Andre Cheam drew more “Ooooh’s and Awwwww’s” than a July 1st Fireworks display.  In fact, fireworks could be considered part of their on court arsenal, along with rockets, cannons and skid-missiles.  They often left opponents spinning in the back draft of their powerful and intimidating shots.  (I am still considering filing charges of Attempted Decapitation against Anthony for his “Can’t Touch This” serves.)

Sweet Revenge*Othello

While the Cheam Team may not be familiar to all TTC members (yet), anyone who’s been around the club for awhile will know the Cheam name has been associated with Tyandaga Tennis for decades, and it seems Anthony has been waiting a couple of years for this past weekend.  Shortly after his Men’s A Championship win, Anthony told ‘reporters it was just two years ago he lost in a semi-final match to the very same duo he was able to beat this time around.

What’s in a name…*Romeo & Juliet

In addition to the aforementioned Cheam-pionship matches, it sure has been fun watching some other on court Family Feuds. Not unlike a Venus/ Serena scenario, we had our own Veronica/Cecelia showdown.  Tournament Coordinator Veronica Fyck and hubby Terry found themselves in a second round match against sister Cecelia and her partner Claro Asuncion.  It was a grueling and rather lengthy affair that finally saw Cecelia and Claro emerge victorious, owning bragging rights which may be brought out at just about every family function between now and next year!

To Thine Own Self Be True *Hamlet

As much fun as watching has been, listening can be equally as entertaining.  No one was surprised to hear the frequent cries of “MICHAEL!!!”, but if you listened closely, you could also hear “VERONICA” (do you suppose it’s genetic?) or “JENNIFER”, “TERRY”, or “JUDY”! .  It seems several Tyandaga Tennis Players find comfort in screaming out their OWN names in the throws of heated competition.  (Kinda makes you wonder whose name they scream during other strenuous physical activities, doesn’t it?)

Can one desire too much of a good thing? *As You Like It

Even before the fond memories of the two past tournaments can fade, the next one is upon us!  And it’s the most thrilling of all. The Singles’ Tournament.  The format is a bit different than in years gone by as it will now be spread out over much of the month of August.  First matches will be played before August 13th.  Second matches before August 20th.  The final rounds will then be played August 26th and 27th.  Don’t miss out on all the action.

Though this be madness, yet there is method in it

If you haven’t been there yet, you have to check out our website!  Webmaster Stephen Cheesman does an absolutely AMAZING job of updating pictures, schedules, and much, much more.  In fact, it is so outstanding you are going to want to have www.tyandagatennis.com as one of your favourites.  Once you’re there you can easily navigate your way around.  Playing times are listed as well as tournament and social event information.   And those pictures!  If you couldn’t personally attend a tournament, or one of our many social events, the next best thing to being there, is checking out the many photos proudly displayed for all to see.

As You Liked It

The Social Committee members have been busy again this year, with their latest success on July 19th.  Retro Night was a huge success!  Everything and anything you enjoyed in previous decades could be worn again on this special night, no questions asked.  TTC President Terry Milford looked absolutely stunning in his tie-dye t-shirt and fro.  Terry and his better half, Mjriam, won the Best Retro Couple, while the Best Retro Costume prize was a tie between TTC’s very own flapper girl Karen Mclean, and Tracey Pocaluyko.  And finally, the winner of the big Retro Raffle Basket was Wahab Ghouli.  (Who, just for the record, promised to buy tickets for every event if he won something.)  And in addition to some friendly Rockin Round Robin tennis, Banana Splits and Ice Cream Floats were served up for all participants.  No takers for the Swamp water.  Go figure??  A great big THANK YOU is again due to Melissa Cheam and Cheriene Vieira for the treats and decorations.

Country Matters *Hamlet

Before Retro…there was Canada Day Night.  On Wednesday June 28th, many Tyandaga faithful showed up to display their ‘true and patriot love’.  Lots of Red and White shirts, shorts and other assorted garments of a nationalist nature.  Fabulous Prizes were awarded to those who strutted their stuff including: Liz Lewis won for Most Patriotic Member.  Stephen and Susan Cheesman won for Best Dressed Canadian Couple.  Terry Roberts won the Good Sport Prize.  In addition to being perfectly colour co-ordinated, he even had socks with Canadian Flags!  (We didn’t check for any matching undergarments or tattoos.)

Good Night, Good Night, Sweating is such sweet sorrow…

This may have been a TTC First.  Tuesday Night Tennis: Cancelled Due to Extremely High Temperatures!  Hard to believe, but it’s true.  The Men’s House League of Tuesday July 5th was OFFICIALLY canceled.  Wouldn’t want you suffering a heat stroke!  (Get it…heat stroke.  Tennis jargon, don’t ya know.)  It is also interesting to note both of our tournaments to date opened just as mini-heat waves set in.  Temperatures over the course of the tournaments hit the mid-thirties, but with the humidex figured in, it was feeling well in to the forties!  Thank you Veronica Fyck for thinking about stocking the fridge and courtside cooler with water.

Merry Wives of Wins, or…

Cries of “Let’s do lunch” have been ringing recently round the courts of Tyandaga.  Darlene (The self proclaimed Queen of the Courts) Shaw hosted a luncheon recently for the Ladies A Interclub players.  We’re hearing a good time was had by all (though apparently not all are able to recall as the rumour mill reports High Balls before High Noon.)  Soon afterwards a luncheon was also held for the Ladies B Interclub with almost 20 of Tyandaga’s Finest in attendance, as the invitation was extended to the Tuesday morning Round Robins’.  There was a lot of Tennis Talkin’ goin on, and tremendous enthusiasm displayed about the new and improved TTC.  You know, we tend to promote ourselves as a social club, but it sounds like we’re also a very competitive bunch.  A fly on the wall reports overhearing one host noting “My pond is deeper than her pool…my skirts are shorter, and…well…as for my…”

**Editors note to self:  Do Not Go There!!!  (but I promise to keep you abreast of any further comments.  And since we’re on the topic of comments…)

Quote-ches Corner

This is a new feature to the TTC Newsletter and one that will require YOUR help in future editions.  A lot of funny/interesting/exciting things are said on and around the courts and we’d like to share those comments with all our members…so if you hear a funny…or an inspirational comment you’d like your fellow members to know about, e-mail it to me and it may up in next months newsletter.  Here are a few recent examples:

“If he’s not bleeding…he hasn’t been playing in a tournament.”

--Observation made about Michael Flintoff after Men’s Doubles Tournament in which several layers of skin-toff were left on the courts.

“It’s not the heat, it’s the stupidity.”

--A self deprecating comment made by a player who prefers to remain anonymous, but who also refused to blame the HOT weather conditions for his/her early tournament departure.

Alls Well That Ends Well

This is one of those stories that is just toooooo funny not to share.  It was during a dark and stormy Friday night a few weeks ago that two of Tyandaga’s faithful were headed home.  Prior to tennis they had taken one of their luxury vehicles in for servicing, and without giving it much thought, they left the keys with it.  Who doesn’t, right? Not a big deal.  So as they’re heading home amidst rain and lightning strikes, they discover that the key ring for the vehicle they’re now driving doesn’t include a house key.  This wouldn’t normally be a problem, except that as they got closer to home, they noticed the power was out in the neighbourhood.  Again, no big deal, until they went to open the garage door…with the automatic garage door opener.  Funny how those things don’t do much when there’s no power!  Fortunately for this suddenly stranded couple, their neighbour has a battery-operated combination lock on their front door, and (for some unexplained reason) they knew the combination.  So (just like Goldilocks) they went in (uninvited) and found a couple of couches that were just right!   By the time they awoke Saturday morning, the power had been restored and they were able to get in to their own home.

Now, as a trusted scribe, the couple involved in this story shall remain anonymous, as I have told them their identities will remain protected.  My only question is…if they couldn’t get in to their own home, why didn’t they just come back to the clubhouse…and sleep on the couches they so generously donated?  (See June Newsletter)

That’s all for now.

Your humble scribe…

Tyandaga Tennis Club Newsletter

June 2006

We’re baaaaack!!!

It’s hard to believe the last time we got together like this…(as in me, the humble scribe, and you…the faithful reader) we weren’t even back on the courts yet!  But now…it seems like we’ve been back at it forever.  Yes, he 2006 season at the Tyandaga Tennis Club is well underway and the level of excitement and enthusiasm is overwhelming.  In fact, we have so much catching up to do I hardly know where to begin.  Let’s start with the near future…and then we’ll have a quick recap of recent history.

The First Social of the Season!

This coming Wednesday…as in Wednesday June 28th, there’s only ONE place you’ll want to be!  (The Tyandaga Tennis Club, naturally!!!)  It’s a birthday party of NATIONAL proportions!  We’re calling on all proud CANADIANS to put on your most patriotic attire and celebrate Canada's birthday at our Canada Day Theme Night.  Just think how stunning you’ll look in your Red & White…on our new Blue and Green!  In addition to a night of round robin adventure, the social committee will be serving up Maple Walnut ice cream with real Canadian Maple Syrup!  (We don’t call them Theme nights for nothing)  Bring your loonies and twoonies and perhaps you’ll be our lucky 50/50 draw prizewinner.  Lot’s of fun!  Lot’s of games!!  And extra points goes to the person who knows all the words to Canada's National Anthem!  I have no doubt we can sing better than Edmonton Oiler fans!  Now, sticking to the RED and white theme…it’s time to catch-up!

How do you like it…so far!

Those spectacular new BLUE courts have been getting rave reviews.  Not only are they visually stunning, but what a treat it is to play on a surface that is no longer like the undulating green of the nearby 9th hole at the Tyandaga Golf Course.

How about that Clubhouse!

Doesn’t the clubhouse look great!  It’s amazing what a fresh coat of paint can do to spruce up the place.  Be sure to pass your praise along to Carol Jenkins who spent part of her winter in the rather chilly confines of our concrete clubhouse…making it look brand spanking new.

How about that Couch!

The ‘new’ furniture in the clubhouse has been getting a lot of comments and attention.  It looks so nice and comfortable that Gord Bradley and others have been thinking aloud that it wouldn’t be so bad to have to spend the night there!?  (More comfortable perhaps than the couch at home?)  Some of you may be wondering…how does a non-profit club on a shoestring budget add such beautiful furniture?  Several members of the executive were actually wondering the same thing, so your trusty investigative journalist went to work and did some digging…and it has been learned our benefactors have requested anonymity.  So I promised Terry and Judy Roberts we wouldn’t tell.

How about those Flowers!

And we’re not just beautiful on the inside…but we’re bloomin’ beautiful outside too.  So stunning in fact, our bleachers could be featured in the next edition of Home and Gardens.  Whether your on the viewing platform of the bleachers, or on the courts below, no doubt you have noticed by now, the lovely flower boxes on the railing.  Again, after some investigative digging, it’s been learned these were donated by the McKays.  “Actually…it was all Gail!” Angus admits after being asked about this additional generous gesture by a TTC member.  Thank you Gail!

Read All About Us

With all the new stuff going on at Tyandaga, it certainly is worthy of a Grand Re-Opening…and that day was spectacular.  After some rainy May days, the skies miraculously cleared and the sun put on its brightest face just in time for Saturday, May 21st.    TTC President Terry Milford, Burlington MPP Cam Jackson, and many others watched with great delight as past TTC-President Angus Mackay used a very large pair of specially made ‘scissors’ (complete with tennis racquet handles) to cut the ceremonial ribbon and declare our new courts OPEN!  The Hamilton Spectator and Burlington Post were both there to record this historic occasion.  There were cheers, and tears, and (long-winded) speeches, but otherwise it was a terrific event!  Our thanks again to the Trillium Foundation for its generous support…and we couldn’t have done it without the tireless efforts of people like Terry Milford, Angus Mackay, and a few others who researched the project, pursued the funding options, and followed it through to completion.  If you missed the Grand Re-Opening, check out the pictures on our website at www.tyandagatennis.com  (And it’s an AMAZING website.  Thanks Stephen Cheesman!)

STD’s

We’ve already mentioned the first big “Social Tyandaga Date” of the season coming up this Wednesday…but you’ll also want to keep in mind Fun Day on Saturday, July 8, Multi-Cultural Fun Night on August 16, Tennis/Gold Day September 9th, and Texas Hold’Em Night on September 13th.  (We hope you’re ALL IN for that one!)  With EVERYTHING looking so great…you are no doubt looking for a few reasons to be spending even more time at the club, and the TTC Social Committee of 2006 has been busy working on making that wish come true.

Thee Social Event Of The Year

Just when you thought it couldn’t possibly get any more social (without catching something) keep in mind there is still THHHEEEEE big year-end bash!  Yes, it is still very early in the season, and this may not be the right time to already be talking about the end of the season, but we want you to be aware of The Annual Year End Springer House Extravaganza on October 14th.  Other pertinent details will be included in upcoming newsletters, but for now, reserve that date on your calendar.

Tournaments of Champions

And while we’re on the topic of marking your calendar, here are the Tournament Dates you’ll want to write down.  The first one of 2006 is the Mixed Doubles Tournament

Friday July 14th and Saturday July 15th.  Next up are the Men’s and Women’s Doubles Tournament Friday July 28th and Saturday July 29th, and then in August it’s the Men’s and Women’s Singles Tournament this year featuring an exciting new format! The Draw will be posted in August; the tournament will be run over the month with the finals being held Saturday August 26th.   For more information or to help run any of the tournaments, please contact Tournament Coordinator Veronica Fyck @ 905 332 8045.

Leagues of Extraordinary Players

It’s also hard to believe our House Leagues have been up and running for about a month already.  As usual there were concerns of imbalance, stacked line-ups and runaway teams, but have you checked the numbers?  The scores to date are pretty much even!  No runaway’s just yet, and it’s nice to see the competitive spirit is still alive and thriving!!!?

And finally…How Big Are We?

The membership drive is over, and the numbers are in, and we’re up from last year!  Treasurer and Membership Coordinator Mary-Wyn Gunn is happy to report a 15% increase in membership over last year.  That doesn’t mean the books are closed.  If you know of someone who would like to join our elite group, and have the privilege of playing on the finest new blue courts in the city, they can still sign up.  Please direct them to our website or pass along a membership flyer to them.

As always…Thanks for reading, and see you on the courts!!!

Counting the Days

It’s no longer months…  It’s no longer weeks…  It is now down to just DAYS.  Mere DAYS until we hear those unmistakable…heart-warming sounds of spring.  The  thwop, thwop of fuzzy balls being smushed against the tightly strung strings of tennis rackets.  The familiar squeak of brand new shoes being broken in on what this year will also be a BRAND NEW COURT SURFACE!!!  If you haven’t been back lately, don’t wait any longer.  You MUST see the new shade of blue we have turned this month.  You must also see the ‘new’ clubhouse.  The Tyandaga Tennis Club is a magnificent facility reborn.  The games of 2006 are about to begin, and they’re shaping up to be the best yet.

Counting the Numbers

Five days of registration earlier this month proved to be a tremendous success.  It was so nice to see so many familiar faces.  Between Saturday April 1st, and Saturday April 15th, hundreds of people showed up….cash or chequebook in hand, barely able to contain their enthusiasm.  All kinds of returning members are wild with anticipation, anxiously waiting to get out on those brand new courts.  There were also lots of brand new faces coming through the door, checking out what all Tyandaga has to offer.  Lots of players are looking forward to renewing old rivalries, while others can’t wait to do their best to alter the dynamics of the house leagues, tournaments, and of course partake in our legendary social nights.  Returning and New Members have so much to look forward too.

Counting the hours

So when do the games begin???  Here are the important dates you’ll want to remember.  It all starts May 6th with Nets Up Day!  League play starts the week of May 9th.  This year’s tournaments get started in June.  Men’s & Ladies Doubles; June 23rd. Mixed Doubles; July 14th.  Juniors Singles & Doubles; July 22nd.  And we’re going with a brand

new format for the Singles competition that will start in early August.

Happy Hours

Just a few sentences ago, “our legendary social nights” were mentioned.  If you haven’t attended one of these in the past, you should mark your calendar now for the very next opportunity.  The Social Committee has been busy over the winter working on some new “Themed Socials”.  The details of these events remain closely guarded secrets for the time being, but more information should be available for release soon.  The first night that will live in infamy is tentatively scheduled for late May.

Many Hours

Details that won’t be kept secret much longer, are the team lists so many of you are anxious to see.  Our House League Conveners and Team Captains have been busy between the last sign up date and now, assessing the unbelievably deep draft available this year.  (For those of you not in to “Sports Talk”, that means there’s all kinds of talent to choose from, making team selection that much more difficult!)  If you signed up for House League play, your team captain should be contacting you shortly to let you know who you’ll be playing with and when.

Rust Prevention

If you’re worried about the state of your game, you might want to book an appointment soon with Farid Ikharbine.  Farid is our new Pro!  He too can’t wait to get going, and comes to us with lots of new enthusiasm and idea’s.  If you want to shake the rust of your game in a hurry, he’ll be offering private lessons, couple’s lessons, group lessons, tips, clinics, and lots more.  You can call him at 905-630-1969 (cell), or leave a message at the club at 905-332-7667.  Or e-mail farid.ikharbine@sympatico.ca  Please help give Farid a warm TTC welcome just as soon as you can.

Thank You SO MUCH…

It’s been said before, but it’s time to say it again.  As we are now so close to stepping on to our brand new courts, we want to say THANK YOU TRILLIUM FOUNDATION!  If it weren’t for the generous support of Ontario’s Trillium Foundation, and a 75 THOUSAND dollar grant we wouldn’t have so much to look forward too this spring.  It’s that grant that is paying for the bulk of the new and improved courts we can’t wait to play on this year.

It’s Still Not Too Late

If you missed the five days of registration…or know of someone who did, not to worry.  You can still sign up.  There is no firm cut-off date.  Keep in mind, league selection is now complete, but all our members can take advantage of open court time, round robin competitions, and of course, the tremendous social opportunities.  And don’t forget to keep on chatting us up.  Tell your friends about the new and improved TTC.  Remember…2006 is going to be the best year yet at the Tyandaga Tennis Club.  You wouldn’t want to miss this for the world.

March 2006

Tyandaga Tennis Club Newsletter

March 2006

This may very well be the most appropriately named e-mail you will ever receive…

It’s the first NEWsletter of the NEW year…and you’re not going to believe what’s NEW at Tyandaga!

New Courts

No doubt you’ve heard all about it…but have you done a drive by viewing yet?  We’ve got brand new courts at the Tyandaga Tennis Club.  Oh, they’re not quite finished yet, but they will be.  Soon.  In fact, it’s taken every ounce of restraint that President Terry Milford has within him, not to call in the crews to put on that new Blue surface.  It’s been warm enough to play tennis at least five times already this year…but he’s holding off.  He’s not so patiently waiting for a few warm, dry SPRING days to present themselves so we can get that new surface on and let the games begin.

Thank You SO MUCH…

It’s been said before, but it’s time to say it again.  THANK YOU TRILLIUM FOUNDATION!  If it weren’t for the generous support of Ontario’s Trillium Foundation, we wouldn’t have so much to look forward too this spring.  Through the Foundation the TTC was awarded a $75,000.00 grant that is paying for the bulk of the new and improved courts we can’t wait to play on this year.

New Windscreens

You can’t see these just yet either, but in a few short weeks, we’ve got some new windscreens to put up around those beautiful blue courts.  So even if the big bad wolf were standing on the outside, he could huff…and he could puff…but with our new windscreens, he’s not going to be blowing our tennis balls around.

New Lights

Still with big bad wolves, the Tyandaga Tennis Club can borrow a line from another one.   Who remembers the classic line “better to see you with…my dear!”  Well, let’s give that line a modern day application as well…cause we’ve got new lights!  This is something that had been discussed in the past, but when the resurfacing opportunity arose, it was decided this would be the time to trip the light fantastic!  And just like the secrecy that recently surrounded the lighting of the Olympic Flame, it remains a closely guarded secret as to who will flick the switch for the very first time and light up our courts.

Wait…there’s more

Just when you thought it couldn’t possibly get any better…it does.  Have we mentioned the practice court yet?  How could you possibly redo everything else, and not the practice court?  Well, we couldn’t.  For the first time in years, the 2006 season will offer a level practice surface that more than just Steve O’Keefe will want to use.

Money Matters

With all this great NEW stuff, you are no doubt asking yourself… “How much is all this going to cost me?” Well worry not, and prepare to be pleasantly surprised.  Our rates are being held at 2005 levels.  Hard to believe that all the fun and friendly competition, PLUS the aforementioned improvements is available at the same price as last year!

And FREE stuff too!

Not only are rates being held at last year’s levels, but we want you to help spread the word.  Now that just about everything is new and improved, we’re hoping you want to share all this with your friends.  If you bring in a new member, you will win a brand new limited edition T-Shirt!  (Okay, they may not be limited editions, but they are brand new.)  Some of you still may not have seen the recently unveiled Tyandaga Tennis Club clothing line.  We’ve got T-shirts and sweatshirts…boldly emblazoned with the logo that was created just last fall, and if you bring in a new member this year, you will be the proud owner of this exclusive must-have t-shirt.  As an extra enticement, tell your friends that if they join the TTC this year, they will also be offered two group clinics absolutely FREE!

New Face

With this renewed effort to bring in first time members and bring back former members, don’t be surprised if you see quite a few new faces around the Tyandaga Tennis Club this year.  One you’ll want to quickly become familiar with is Farid Ikharbine.  Please welcome our new Tennis Pro!  He comes to us with impressive Tennis and teaching credentials.

Farid played Davis Cup Tennis for Algeria, was the Algerian National Team Coach and has been the Head Coach at the ACE Tennis Academy and coached at the Niagara Tennis Academy and presently coaches at Cedar Springs, he is pleased and proud to call the Tyandaga Tennis Club his new home and is looking forward to meeting everyone. Farid specializes in coaching juniors so, mom, dad, think about lessons or clinics for the kids this summer.

Farid promises lots of new enthusiasm and idea’s.  He’ll be offering private lessons, couple’s lessons, group lessons, tips, clinics, and lots more.  Please help give Farid a warm TTC welcome just as soon as you can.

While We Were Out

Just like the TV show that redoes your home while you’re away, a “While You Were Out” efforts been going on INSIDE of the Tyandaga Tennis Clubhouse.  While most of us have been wearing our kerchiefs and caps, all settled in for long winters naps, our

reno-elves have been busy with their rollers and brushes.  As was mentioned in our last newsletter, even the clubhouse is getting a new look.  So this would be a good time to thank to our happy painters: Carol Jenkins, Mary Wyn and Brook Gunn, Erin Gibson, Kelly Rennie, Sylvia Hall, Lisa Rayner and Terry Milford.

Help Wanted

Just like the Burlington Post, we’ve added a bit of our own Help Wanted section to the TTC Newsletter.  Once again we find ourselves looking for members who may want to take over a league, or help organize events and tournaments.  Don’t worry, you won’t be taking over right away, but we would like to start grooming aspiring leaders for the future.  If you think you can help out with any of these positions, please contact Veronica Fyck.  She is actively seeking able-bodied assistants who are looking toward future leadership opportunities.

Are you good with Numbers?

If terms like “cash flow” “year end statements” and “budget” send shivers up and down your spine, we may have a new opportunity for you. The TTC is looking for a Treasurer…someone who is good with numbers and can do a pretty mean balancing act!  Yes, this is a position of considerable responsibility but it also comes with cheque signing privileges.  (Something most husbands know nothing about.)  If this sounds appealing to you, please make Terry Milford aware of your interest.

And Finally…having trouble getting a date?

It’s not like we’re saving the best for last…(or maybe we are) but what NEWsletter would be complete without tempting you with a few more details about upcoming events that promise more fun than humans should be allowed to have.  We’re not talking personal ads here, but we could easily be in the business of keeping you socially active for months at a time.  Members of the TTC will have absolutely no worries about finding attractive dates this year.  Dates beginning as early as April 1st and continuing right through to October.  We’ve got more exciting dates in six months than Terry Milford has had in his lifetime.

It all starts with Registration, Saturday April 1st, Wednesday April 5th and

Saturday April 8th

The fun continues on April 29th with the official Nets Up Day/ Open House, more on this later. League play starts the week of May 15th.  This year’s tournaments get started in June…with a brand new format for the Singles competition that gets going in early August.  If you can’t wait to get in to the friendly, yet sometimes cut-throat competition of our league or tournament play, no doubt you’ll remember our legendary “Themed Socials”.  Some of our socials have been so successful; Tyandaga members routinely find themselves in the Burlington Post!  (Not to mention what stuff ends up on the internet. ;-)))  Naturally…much more information is forthcoming in future newsletters.  For now we just wanted to wet your appetite.

By for now

That’s all for now.  Yes, there’s more we could say, but we’ll save those details for future newsletters.  Keep your eyes open for more updates in the weeks to come.  Don’t forget…it’s never too early to register!  And also don’t forget to tell your friends.  2006 is going to be the best year yet at the Tyandaga Tennis Club.

Christmas 2005

Seasons Greetings!!!

Tyandaga Tennis Club Newsletter

December 2005

‘Tis the week before Christmas…and under the snow…

Are four BRAND NEW Tennis Courts…rarin’ to go!

The new base has been laid by the pavers with care…

As Tyandaga in ’06 will be beyond compare…!

The Majestic Blue top-coat will wait for the spring…

A few delays in the fall means it didn’t get in…

So it will wait now till March, or till April, or May…

When that gorgeous new BLUE top…will replace what’s now grey…

And to what do we owe our heartfelt appreciation?

But a generous grant from the Trillium Foundation…

And it’s not just the courts that next year will be new

But the clubhouse is sporting a fresh shade of blue too!

Mixed with grey and some white, a few angles and lines

The painting ‘elves’ have been busy…making it look oh so fine!

There’s just so much to tell you about what’s going on…

Seems all that’s the same are the trees and the lawn…

We are Oh So Excited we just can’t wait to share

All that’s fresh and that’s new and waiting for you there…

Which is why we are asking to help spread the word…

If there’s anyone out there who hasn’t yet heard

About just how much fun we all have at our club.

The tournaments, and leagues, the occasional pub…

Few places can boast of the things that we do,

Yes, we’re 40 years old…but now we’re also brand new!

2005 was amazing, as have been all years past…

And you know that ’06…is going to be a real blast,

We hope all of our friends and familiar faces…

Will be back again next year to serve up a few aces…

But it’s also a great time for Tyandaga to grow…

So be sure to tell all tennis players you know…

That we’re going to have the newest blue courts in town

So they might want to stop up and have a look around.

And you know once they meet us, and see what we’ve got,

They’ll realize Tyandaga is a north end hot spot.

And when asked if they’ll sign up, what else could they say,

But “Of course Tyandaga is where we want to play!”

“We can’t wait to get started!” They’ll say all together,

Which will make us wish for that May warmer weather.

And before we all know it, the spring will be here,

And then, (just as now) we’ll be filled with great cheer.

But reality tells us it’s still cold, white and bitter,

Won’t be spring for awhile, as it’s still early winter.

So the tennis we wish for, will have to stay in our dreams,

Just like those sugar plums, and “Focus Michael” screams.

Cause at this time of year it’s about skiing and skating,

Not serving, and lobbing, and line-call debating.

Terry’s dri-fits are packed with his free Wilson Cap…

Instead it’s a toque and a turtleneck, and a long winter nap…

But time, as they say, really knows how to fly,

Just like Rudolph and Comet can race through the sky,

And in no time…it will be time for the games to begin…

(And we’ll quickly rediscover, what awful shape we are in)

But until then, there’s just one more line I will write;

Merry Christmas to all…and to all…a good night!

From my family to yours,

Happy Holidays!

Tom Otto

From the entire Tyandaga Tennis Club Executive

Please have a very Merry Christmas

**Editors Note:  This month, it’s a special sing-along-edition with countless musically themed subtitles to keep you humming from beginning to end.  See how many tunes you can carry.

Presidents Message (Hail to the Chief would be the normal accompaniment for this one)

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Executive, Peter and all those who volunteered their time to make Tyandaga Tennis Club a great place to play tennis and more importantly have fun.

A special thank you, to you, the members that made my first year as President a true pleasure and honor.

I look forward to next year with anticipation knowing that with our winning combination we can expect another great season. .

Terry Milford

That’s enough from me…take it away Tom.

Is that all there is???

It’s hard to believe another action packed, fun filled season of Tennis at Tyandaga has come and gone.  No sooner had many injuries started to heal, than it was time to hang up the sneakers for a few months.  There was no shortage of exciting events to usher out another great year though…which brings me to one of the many VERY IMPORTANT special mentions that is long overdue.  We would like to thank and salute the wonderful TTC Social Committee of 2005.  Melissa Cheam and Cherine Vieira deserve a thunderous round of applause for all the hard work they did this year.  From the Welcome BBQ in May, to the Fun Day in June, Canada Day in July, Luau Night in August and most recently the Mexican/Wooden Racquet Night, these volunteers put in a lot of time and effort to make sure the rest of us had several enjoyable days/nights.  Thank you, Thank you, Thank you.  You helped make 2005 a very special year for everyone.

Wasn’t That A Party…

It could’a been the whiskey…Or it might’a been the Gin…Or maybe even the three or four six-packs, I don’t know…but look out…cause it’s comin’ round again.

The Annual Springer House Extravaganza is nearly upon us.  There’s still time to get tickets for Saturday October 8th and the annual banquet.  Tyandaga’s tournament winners will be crowned.  The League winners will be recognized, and even if you didn’t win there, you could still walk away with fabulous prizes.  Random draws featuring fabulous door prizes will be featured throughout the awards banquet.  Tickets are $35 and available through Angus Mackay 905 335 8701and Melissa Cheam 905 335 8438.

Don’t Cry For Me…Tyandaga…

It was a bittersweet day at the Tyandaga Tennis Club on Saturday, September 17th.  There was a party like atmosphere in the air as almost 30 regulars came out for the annual Golf-Tennis extravaganza.  A few hours of friendly competition on the tennis and basketball courts was followed by a round of golf and then dinner at the Tyandaga Golf Club House.  And before the day was done, the nets came down, and the curtain fell on the 2005 season.  But few tears were shed this year.  In fact, any tears that trickled down the cheeks of Tyandaga faithful…are tears of JOY.  Because there’s a new buzz in the air! (and it’s not coming from the wasps net underneath the bleachers)

Closing Time (Every New Beginning…is Another New Beginnings End)

It is time for celebration and rejuvenation at the TTC.  Our cracked, weather worn and often undulating court surface is in the midst of a major facelift.  After a couple of years worth of planning and tendering and negotiating, the work has finally begun.  The thwop, thwop, thwop of tennis balls has now been replaced by the purr of bobcats and bulldozers.  Because next year we’re going to be playing on BRAND NEW COURTS!!!

If you haven’t done a drive by viewing yet, pictures will be available on the website of what used to be the old courts.

Mr. Blue

In case you weren’t aware, Angus McKay and Terry Milford can now be referred to as Mr. Blue.  Both have been doing a whole bunch of back court negotiating over the past couple of years in an effort to get us the best deal, the best job, and the best looking tennis facility this side of Lake Ontario.  And no longer will you be playing on a tired red and green surface.  It will instead be a lovely hue of blue, so if you hear Terry or Angus humming…that old Fleetwood’s favourite… “I’m Mr. Blue…oooh oohooh ooooh.”

Painting

Not only are the courts getting a facelift…but so too is the clubhouse!  Paige Davis and Martha Stewart have nothing on our very own Carol Jenkins and Melissa Cheam who are in the process of some interior designing.  If you would like to assist with the transformation please call Carol @ 905 336 2780. The colors have been carefully selected, and the conceptual designs explored and by next spring, you’re not going to recognize the place.  Okay, so it will still look the same on the outside, but be prepared to be amazed.

We Are the Champions…

See if you can guess who won the Men’s Singles Title this year.  No.  No.  Guess again.  Okay…you probably nailed it on the first or second-guess.  Yes, it was another classic showdown at the TTC.  Just like Roddick and Federer, or Sampras and Aggassi, or Lendl, Connors or McEnroe, Tyandaga features an annual O’Keefe Vs. Flintoff grudge match.  Again this year, it was a back and forth struggle, a battle of the tennis titans, a physically and orally grueling grudge match…and just like last year, Mike Flintoff admits he was left wishing for a different outcome.  Stephen O’Keefe is the 2005 Men’s Singles Tennis Champion.

On the Women’s side, again, a couple of familiar faces were featured in the final.  Tracy  Pocaluyko and Veronica Fyck served and volleyed their way through an exhilarating match with Tracy emerging victorious.  Be sure to check out all the pictures on our website at www.tyandagatennis.com

There’s No Business, Like Show Business

OTA Night was another huge success last month.  In what has become a highly anticipated annual event, participants got to test out some of the latest in racquet technology, see first hand what pro’s like Federer, Roddick, and the Williams sisters are using on the courts, while also learning valuable doubles tips and on court strategy.

Radar Love

The OTA night also featured a chance to find out “Whose Got The Power”.  A radar gun was set up at centre court and Tyandaga’s finest took their best shots.  Terry Milford and Gail McKay won the fastest serve contest.  Clearly, accuracy didn’t count or Terry wouldn’t have likely even made it as a finalist…and we’re all also hoping that by next year he’ll have gotten over it, and accepted the fact that second place is good too!

Wait’ a go Gail!  Now you know what they mean when they say Gail Force Winds!

Peter’s Pro Tip

It wouldn’t be a newsletter without a comment from our club Pro.  Peter Patiakas has done an amazing job again this year guiding us through the tournaments, improving many members games through lessons, and so much more.  So his tip for this edition is:

Keep your balls warm over the winter.  They can go soft and mushy and playing with them in that state isn’t nearly as much fun.”  Okay…that isn’t exactly a direct comment from Peter for this newsletter, but he did say something to that affect at the last executive meeting as he warned us of the impact of cold winter temperatures on Mr. Dunlop and Mr. Wilson.  So don’t leave yours neglected in the garage when the temperature starts to drop.  Always good advice for any round, fuzzy things you hope will still be capable of peak performance in the new year.

Unforgettable…(That’s what it is)

Have you seen it yet?  You know…the other new thing at the TTC.  (It’s nearly unbelievable how much new stuff is going on!!!)  The obvious answer is o course you haven’t seen it yet because it has yet to be officially unveiled!  Remember that contest we’ve been promoting all summer?  The one about a NEW LOGO?  Well, we have a winner!  I can’t tell you who it is just yet.  That’s classified information until the big banquet.  Which quite coincidentally is precisely when the new logo will be officially unveiled, so you have yet another reason to attend.  Hope to see you Saturday, October 8th at the Springer House for the official unveiling, awards ceremony, great food, lots of fun, and did I mention fabulous prizes?

So long…Farewell…Auf Feidersain…Good-Bye

I suspect that this newsletter has gone on long enough, but if you do still want more, watch your in-box for updates in the months to come.  We have so many exciting things on-going, we wouldn’t think of not keeping you apprised.  The members of the TTC Executive would like to thank you for your support this past season and we look forward to seeing you all out again in a few months time.  Don’t forget…new courts…a new look to the clubhouse…and we’re definitely looking forward to seeing you in the New Year.  2006 could be our best year ever!  In fact, it’s going to be so good…we want you to tell your friends!  We’d like to encourage new members to come and experience one of Burlington’s best kept secrets…The Tyandaga Tennis Club!

July/August 2005

A Midsummer Nets Dream

Also Known as…

The July /August ‘05 Tyandaga Tennis Club Newsletter

(Slightly Delayed)

Hello again fellow tennis aficionado’s, and right off the top let this humble scribe apologize profusely for the delay in July’s much-anticipated Newsletter.  The summer of 2005 has been so incredibly action packed, that unfortunately barely a moment has been found to sit down and pound out all the details.  So without further ado…let’s get to all the juicy details.

Where To Begin????

The most pressing question right now is…which exciting story should go first? Past, present or future thrills?   Let’s start with the MOST urgent matter: the last tournament of the season! It is fast approaching…and some consider it the most sought after title of the year.  The TTC Singles Tournament is scheduled for August 26th and 27th.    We can’t wait to see who will be the 2005 Men’s and Women’s Champions!  Who can forget that wild final last year where shouts of “Focus Michael” and a few other colourful phrases filled the air.  Even if you don’t make it in to the final, the entertainment value as a spectator is phenomenal.

Two Down…One to go!

If there’s only the Singles Tournament left, that means July featured TWO action packed tournaments at the TTC, and they’re still talking about the Mixed Doubles event!  A hearty congratulations is due to Angie and Ike Bauer, the 2005 Mixed Doubles Champions!!!   They managed to fight their way through the ranks, defeating Jill Cates and Stephen Cheesman in the final match to take the title.  The 2005 Consolation Champs are Veronica and Terry Fyck.  The Fyck’s duked it out with Tracey Pocaluyko and Angus MacKay in the Consolation Final.

Earlier in the month, the TTC hosted its annual Ladies and Men’s Doubles Tournament and the winners are…(drum roll please…)

On the Ladies side, the tournament was a round robin affair in which Robyn Mackenzie and Tracey Pocaluyko came out on top.  Darlene Shaw and Mary Beth Duwynn finished in second, with Veronica Fyck and Judy Flintoff in third.

On the Men’s side…(again…a drum roll please)  The 2005 Men’s Doubles Champs are; Mike Flintoff and Stephen O’Keefe.  Yes, they are the defending champs and will be again next year!  Mike and Stephen were able to fend off Ike Bauer and John Butler to reclaim their title.  The Consolation champs are Adrie Bruin and Tony Lewis who were able to defeat Rene Mirand and Claro Asuncion in that final match-up.

Hard to believe there’s still more to come!

The social calendar is far from over for 2005!  In fact, the next big deal is just days away.  The annual OTA Night is set for Wednesday, August 17th.  It’s just ten bucks a person, and that includes a great T-shirt.  Enrolment is limited so don’t delay.  A few spots are still available.

Could there be even more…?

But of course!  And what could be more fun than an invigorating tennis match followed by some pasture pool?  You know, swing and swear… AKA…golf!  The Annual TTC Tennis/Golf Day is set for Saturday, September 17th.  It’s the final day of Tennis for the 2005 season at Tyandaga as the nets will come down following tennis that day.  While a few hands will be needed for net duty, the rest of you will be teeing it up, and driving down that fairway.  The entire adventure wraps up with dinner at the Tyandaga Golf Course clubhouse.  For tickets/details, talk to the club prez-Terry Milford or Peter Patiakas.

Also…Coming Soon…

The Annual TTC Fall Banquet is once again this year being held at the Springer House on Hiway 5. (aka Dundas Street between Guelph and Brant)  The fun, frivolity, fine food, and fabulous prizes is set for Saturday, October 8th.  A limited number of tickets are available.  Please see any member of the TTC executive for more information and tickets.

Got Any Spare Doors…?

In order to make the Annual Fall Banquet as much fun (and lucrative) as possible, we are looking for your donations.  The bigger the Door Prize Table, the more we will be able to share the wealth.  If you are in retail yourself, or if you happen to have great connections with someone who likes to give away free stuff, let us know.  All contributions are appreciated…and will be duly noted in future Newsletter publications as well as at the banquet itself.

Tyandaga Chainsaw Massacre…

If you happen to be out on the courts within the next few days, do not be alarmed if you suddenly hear that sometimes disturbing, motorized roar that goes something like this: “rrrnn…ddnnn….nnn….nnn…nnn”  (Think cheap slasher movie of the seventies)  Yes, that is the roar of a CHAIN SAW, but do not despair, it’s being used for good, not evil.  As part of the exciting new TTC reno planned for this fall, that great big tree that consumes part of the practice area and overshadows court number three, is soon to be gone.  (Anyone need firewood this winter?  All you have to do is axe.)

Fun Day…sure was!!!

You may recall a mention in the June Newsletter of the upcoming Fun Day at Tyandaga.  It was a beautiful, sunny Saturday and many members came out to play tennis, basketball, or hockey…enjoy burnt offerings from the BBQ and toss back a few cold ones.  (Water balloons that is)  Peter drew up some formidable teams who went on to do their best in several grueling events.  Fabulous prizes were provided by Peter and the Social Committee, and yes Fun was had by all!

**One point of clarification should be made.  Yes Malcolm, there was a slight misunderstanding of the rules when it came to the hockey competition, so your suspicions were correct…but as the youngsters say…SIUP…(suck it up princess…for the uninformed)

Oh CANADA

The social committee also hosted a Canada Day Theme night on June 29th.  Many Tyandaga faithful showed up to display their ‘true and patriot love’.  Lots of Red and White shirts, shorts and other assorted over and undergarments of a nationalist nature.  Since it was another hot and steamy summer night…it sure was kind of Larry Anderson to bring along a couple of large melons.  If you’re not sure what we’re talking about, check out the picture on the TTC website, or see if you can still pick up a copy of the July 22nd edition of the Burlington Post.  Yes, that’s right.  The Tyandaga Tennis Club continues to make headlines.

Extra…Extra…Read all about it…

Not only do we provide local news providers with great photo-ops, the TTC is also providing the press with regular updates on the clubs main events.  Check the Hamilton Spectator, August 11th edition for a mention in an article by Linda Cowan.

Start Spreadin’ The News…

As mentioned ever so briefly a moment ago, don’t forget that the TTC is in for a MAJOR RENO this fall.  Just as the nets come down, the quality of tennis at Tyandaga is going way up.  We’re about to become the Newest Game In Town!  Brand new courts for 2006!  The plans are complete, and the deal is done.  Now we want you to share this exciting information with every other tennis player you know.  If your friends include folks who used to play at Tyandaga, but went somewhere else, remind them that next year, we’re going to be even better than we are now!  We’re always looking to welcome back former members and of course we’re also always looking to welcome new ones.

Speaking of new and improved…How’Bout That Website!

If you haven’t been there yet, you HAVE TO visit the new and improved Tyandaga Tennis Club website.  The address is easy.  www.tyandagatennis.com.  Once your there you can easily navigate your way around.  Playing times are listed as well as tournament and social event information.   And those pictures!  See Larry’s Melons.  Tournament highlights…and much, much more.

How Logo…can you go?

As mentioned in earlier TTC Newsletter editions, we are looking for a new logo!  Any and all ideas are gratefully accepted.  Tap in to your inner creativity and come up with an awe-inspiring brand.  Fabulous prizes await the award-winning designer.  Entries can be dropped off in the clubhouse.

Wanna be a Leader?

As you know, the TTC couldn’t function without its volunteers, and we’re looking now for next year’s generous leaders.  There are several potentially prestigious positions looking for new faces.  Don’t be shy.  Let us know now if you’d be interested in helping to organize a house league, a tournament, or one of our many social events.  Be a co-coordinator or an assistant and help us make ’06 as successful as ‘ 05.

That’s all for now.

Peter’s Tip of the month

ONLY THE BALL!

Having trouble focusing on the match, spending too much time worrying about who you’re playing against?

Here's a quick suggestion to help get you into the match:

Often, our thoughts travel during our match, work, family, etc. If this happens to you then try this quick fix. During the warm up or between points or evening during a point, to yourself, call out the different colours of the things around you. for instance, 'green' - the windscreen, 'red' - the court or 'yellow' the ball.  Just keep saying these colours over and over and you will see just how quickly you are focused in on the task at hand.

In a somewhat similar situation, if you are more worried about who is sending the ball over the net rather than concentrating on your return itself this can also help you to  on the task at hand. Again, repeating the phrase 'only the ball' to yourself over and over will help you concentrate on the ball being sent rather than the person sending it
